The Havanese dog is a worthy member of the Bichon family. The breed is intelligent, and has a tendency to learn tricks quite rapidly. They are playful, and do well with children, canine, and non-canine pets. Training should begin at an early age. Havanese dogs are very easy-going. A quality purebred dog will never show signs of aggressiveness.

The Havanese dog has a long silky coat that can be either wavy, or curly. The dog is double-coated, which protects it from extreme temperatures. Both the undercoat and outer coat are soft in texture. They are non-shedding and hypoallergenic. The coat is never woolly. It is light and comes in a variety of colors. According to the standard, the Havanese dog may come in any color. No preference is given to a particular color pattern.  Though bred for being a companion, the Havanese dog is never too fragile, and it is a fit for families with small children. It has strong legs. The body is slightly longer than it is tall. The tail is carried curled over the back.

Height ranges from 8.5 to 11.5 inches (ideal from 9 to 10.5 inches). Weight ranges from 7 to 13 pounds (ideal 8 to 11 pounds). Life span is approximately 15 years.
