We have a very small breeding program consisting
of four female Havanese (Skipper, Rosie, Coco and Tillie) and three males (Bullet,
Checkers
and Miki). Our dogs and puppies live
with us in our home along with our cats, birds and Siberian Huskies.
Our Havanese are fully health checked before breeding. These tests
include CERF, BAER, cardiac, patellas and hips. |

One part of our breeding program that is unique
to us is the intensive early socialization that we provide in order to take
advantage of critical periods in the puppy’s neurological development.
This method has been proven to produce dogs that can adapt to new
situations and withstand stress more easily. They usually possess
superior problem solving ability and are more emotionally balanced than
puppies not exposed to such early stimuli. |

We also allow the dam to wean the puppies at her
own pace and she and the puppies determine when nursing stops. This
extended time with the dam provides the puppies with the opportunity to
learn impulse control and teaches them the importance of “reading”
another dog for cues before leaping into a potentially dangerous or
unwanted situation. This in turn translates into a puppy that is used
to receiving a correction for unwanted behavior and is an easier dog to
train. |

Each puppy's temperament is evaluated very
carefully before a new owner is selected. This is done to determine how well the puppy
will fit into its future pack (human family). For example, a puppy that
is somewhat timid would not be the best choice for a family with young
boisterous children, or a puppy who demonstrates a lot of independence may not
be a good choice for a first time dog owner who may not be familiar with
the training techniques necessary to keep the dog successfully integrated with his
pack. |

Puppies are ready to go to their new homes at 10
weeks of age. There is a natural fear/avoidance period that occurs
between 8 and 10 weeks of age and it is critical not to subject puppies
to highly stressful experiences during that time. This includes the
great disruption of separation from the dam and siblings. By 10 weeks
of age, the puppies are weaned, well socialized, partially crate trained,
and can walk on a leash. Litter box (potty) training will have been initiated and
although there are bound to be some accidents, the puppies will be used
to the concept of having a designated place to eliminate. We use
the Second Nature system by Purina to train the puppies to use a litter
box. This is great during a storm, in the night, or whenever you
can't be immediately available to take your puppy outside. Puppies
will also be doggie door trained as requested by the new owner. |

All puppies are up to date on immunizations,
have been dewormed, microchipped and vet checked. Each puppy goes home with a puppy
packet, which includes pedigree information, baby pictures, training
tips and a starter pack of food that the puppy was weaned to. |
